Assignment Description and Instructions
As a university student (and eventual professional in the world beyond college), you will be introduced to a variety of writing situations with different goals and audiences. Before you can engage as a versatile writer, you must first recognize how you define writing and where you see yourself in that unique landscape.
For this assignment, you are going to create a 3-5page exploratory piece explaining your definitions of writing and you as a writer. Consider the following questions to help you find focus:
• What is writing?
• Is there a difference between an author and a writer? Why or why not?
• What do you consider good writing? Why?
• What do you consider bad writing? Why?
• Where does writing come from?
• How to you arrive at the ideas you wish you write about?
• How do you see yourself as a writer?
• What do you currently know about writing?
• What do you know about your own writing strategies?
• In the actual act of writing, what are your processes? How do you begin? What steps do you take?
• How do you learn to write? How do you know you’ve learned something new about writing?
• How do you change your perceptions of writing? Should you change them? Why or why not?
Do not feel as though you have to answer every question. You can focus on a single question or a combination of several to complete your piece. In pursuit of your piece, consider the following elements for support material (bolded items indicate required elements of support):
• Personal experiences and narratives
• Textual evidence/support from readings discussed during this unit
• Previous pieces you have written, both assigned and unassigned
• Textual evidence/support from outside sources and popular writers
