WRITE: Narrative Composition

After reading Beth Johnson’s essay “Joe Davis: A Cool Man,” (Groundwork Textbook pages 380 – 386) think about how this story relates to you. Like Joe Davis, many of us have learned painful lessons from life. And like him, we wish we could pass these lessons on to young people to save them from making the same mistakes.

Write a narrative paragraph in which you use your own experience as a lesson. Begin with a topic sentence stating the lesson you’d like to teach, as in these examples:

  • My own experience is a lesson on why it’s a bad idea to get involved with drugs and the people who take them.
  • I hope others can learn from my experience that dropping out of high school is a big mistake.
  • I know from firsthand experience that teenage girls should not let their boyfriends pressure them into a sexual relationship.

As you develop your paragraph, be sure to use sensory detail to describe your emotions and feelings about this moment in time.  Explain in detail the hard lesson you learned and how you learned it.

Here are the requirements of this assignment:

  • Your paragraph should have a statement of a main idea or purpose, followed by specific examples or details that support and develop that point. You should refer to your Fusion textbook (page 108) for further reminders on writing a descriptive composition.
  • Your paragraph should contain 10 or more sentences (not counting your topic sentence) that support your main idea/topic.
  • Your paragraph should be 125 words or more (in the body of your paper—not counting your name, course name, date, or title)
