Although some scholars like Gaibulloev and Sander argue that “freedom of the press in democracies even provides terrorists with the publicity that they seek for their causes” (Gaibulloev & Sander, 2017, 493). I strongly believe when an individual lacks freedom or the state excludes them from political processes, this can cause terrorism. Although I do not believe that it is a direct correlation because terrorism is such a complex subject, as seen in our previous classes. Moreover, Alok Bohara describes how “democratic institutions and behaviors hold officials accountable for their actions and likely restrain these officials from disproportionate responses” (Bohara, 2006, 111). I would argue that political freedoms and participation in political processes play an instrumental role that can eventually lead to terrorism, but not a direct role. There are various aspects (social capital) of democracy that can hinder democracy, such as political leaders’ accountability and lower human rights violations. To prove this argument, scholars such as Alberto Abadie also claim that “countries in some intermediate range of political freedom are shown to be more prone to terrorism than countries with high levels of political freedom or countries with highly authoritarian regimes” (Abadie, 2004, 1). I would argue that these scholars describe relationships with the act of terrorism; however, what leads an individual to commit a terrorist attack is too complex in order to establish a set number of causes (terrorism is the combination of a variety of factors and a case by case basis). That being said, I do believe when you allow all actors to sit at the table, this commitment to transparency may hinder the chances of terrorism.
