Use of Force in the Course of an Arrest

  1. This is a 2-3 page position (opinion) paper exploring police use of force in making an arrest. 

    Review the textbook and conduct outside research concerning the constitutional use of police force during the arrest of a suspect. Using that information, including at least one (1) outside source, write a 2-3 page paper, in APA formatting, addressing the following: 

    1. Describe, from your research, when it is constitutionally permissible for police to use force during the course of an arrest. Be sure to identify and explain at least ONE major Supreme Court case in this part of the discussion (you may explain more than one); 
    2. Provide an example, real or fictional, of a situation where police WOULD be constitutionally authorized to use force during the course of an arrest (NOT using the facts of the case(s) you identified above); 
    3. Explain whether you believe (written in 1st person) that police should be authorized to use force during the course of an arrest. If you believe that the standard should be different, explain what you believe the standard should be and why. Be sure to support your opinion fully. 

    As in any essay paper, be sure to format this in APA, include a cover page and reference page, double spacing and intext citations to the websites. Remember, this isnt a short answer assignment, this should be a unified essay, containing cover page, reference page, and within the 2-3 page paper, an introduction, body and a conclusion. You may use headings if you so choose.
