United States Read Text Secondary Source Article

FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS PLEASE: My policy paper topic is Lesbian Health Disparity in the United States Read Text selection (R – researching; play close attention to section R3-c (I HAVE ATTACHED THE PDF)

  • Select a secondary source article that cites primary research that you are using for your policy paper (hint: you need to know what a secondary source article is, so make sure you do the reading first)
  • Prepare a quick summary of what the secondary source says the primary research concludes.Does this secondary source make an argument or draw a conclusion based on this summary of the primary research?(This is in preparation for your essay, but won’t necessarily be the content of your essay)
  • Now, locate the primary research, read and summarize it without looking at the secondary source.
    • What is the primary research testing or demonstrating?
    • Is the research methodology solid?Is it appropriate for the hypothesis or the research question?
    • Are the conclusions drawn from this research solid or should there be caveats presented with the findings?
  • After having reviewed the primary source yourself and summarized it, compare and contrast your summary and evaluation of the primary research to that found in the secondary source:
    • Compare your summary of the primary source’s research question, methodology and findings to that presented in the secondary source.Is there a difference?
    • Does the secondary source present the findings in the same way the primary source does? Is it drawing the same conclusions or putting them in a different context? actually say or present what the article says it does?
    • What does this suggest to you?
  • Write an essay that compares the summary of the primary research by the secondary source to your summary.Follow the guidance provided on page 353 of the reading to help you evaluate your sources and their arguments, uses of research. The essay should:
    • Be at least 1-2 pages in length (recommended length) MLA format, Times New Roman, size 12 font
    • Demonstrate your ability to compare a primary source and a secondary source
    • Have a title that reflects the content of the article or the quality of its sourcing rather than the nature of the assignment

    • Your ability to locate a primary source from a reference in a secondary source.
    • Your ability draw conclusions based on sources and evaluate an argument or a conclusion based on the quality of the sources and how they are used by the author of the article

NOTE: This homework assignment mimics what you will need to do for each of the source articles you use in your policy paper, so improving this skill is essential for writing a solid policy position paper.
