Imagine that you are the special education liaison for your school district. In order to comply with the federal guidelines regarding transition planning for students with IEPs, the school district now requires curriculum and instruction to support the transition domains. The Director of Special Education for the district requests that you provide an outline of topics to cover so that teachers at different levels (elementary, middle, and high school) are preparing appropriate lesson plans and activities that support transition planning.
First, decide on a theme for your transition unit. You can consider some of these themes for your unit: independent living, how to do laundry, budgets, how to pick a college or trade school, and how to plan a menu. Next, select a level for your unit-elementary, middle, or high school. Once that is done you can then begin to develop your outline for your transition unit.
Create a 1- to 2-page outline for a transition unit that addresses the following domains:
- Employment and continuing education
- Personal living
- Recreation and leisure
- Finances (e.g., income and medical/health expenses)
- Transportation
- Self-advocacy
Provide a brief description of the following components for each domain in the unit:
- Learning goal(s)
- Method of instruction (e.g., in classroom, online, self-study)
- Student-directed learning activity
- Materials, resources, or supplies necessary
- Technology use
- Community-related experience
