Becoming a manager is a very important responsibility and should not be taken lightly. I believe that I would be an effective manager and would learn a great deal from the experience. One of the reasons I know I could be someone’s manager is my understanding of one of the key principles discussed at the beginning of our textbook. The principle is: what are the distinguishing factors that separate management work from non-management work? Three answers are provided: First, the taking of “responsibility for actions and decisions (yours and others)” (Cafferky, 2012, p. 14). Second, the coordination of the work of other individuals, such as work teams, or full departments. Lastly, being oriented toward the future but at the same time focusing on what is needed to be done in the present and knowing where the company or organization is coming from. It is these three core things along with faith that form the foundation for effective management.

Being a manger means one is willing to take on the full responsibility of these principles and are dedicated to the success of others. If placed in leadership roles or management positions, I know I would take the time and carry the responsibility to make sure these things are carried out successfully. I am also a people person and tend to work in groups very well. Of course, there would be a learning curve stepping into a new leadership position and I would not ignore that. Seeking the input of others and being open to constructive criticism are important. I would establish a human relations method that allowed everyone to voice opinions and contribute. A verse that I think is very applicable to management is Ephesians 5:15-17 which tells us “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (ESV). Pride will never contribute to an effective management situation or good work environment and remembering to listen, be humble, and act with integrity is extremely important.
