Introduction

There are five stages through which targeted school violence offenders go. In each of these stages, there are signs that could alert people in the offender’s life that trouble is on the horizon. The five stages are:

  • Stage 1: Latent anger, injustice collector, and fragile personality.
  • Stage 2: Leakage, pre-offense communications.
  • Stage 3: Aggressive immersion.
  • Stage 4: Formation, planning, and gathering.
  • Stage 5: Attack.

These stages are fully explained in the unit introduction and in three of your assigned readings for this unit.

In this assignment, you will review the media Recognizing the Threat of a Targeted Attack, which has several scenes that include many of these signs. You will be asked to apply your readings and research in this course to the simulation and answer the questions for this assignment.

Instructions

For this assignment, complete the following

  • Analyze the indicators of potential school violence portrayed in the simulation. What do you see in each scene that can be interpreted as an indicator of a possible targeted attack? How likely do you think it is that an incident of targeted school violence will take place in the case of the simulated situation? Support your work with credible resources.
  • Determine how early warning systems could be put into play pre-event in this simulation in ways that would be beneficial in mitigating the possible event.
  • Evaluate the usefulness of threat assessment in pre- and post-secondary education. Do you think that threat assessment teams should be present at all grade levels
