- Using the class readings and the class notes, write four short essays of 500-700 words each (so around 2000 to 3000 overall) in response to only four of the following:
Note: revised CUNY’s RULES FOR ACADEMIC Plagiarism. Any copied answers from any websites or other sources are not accepted. Refer clearly to any external source you might use in your answer. All my best wishes. Doing external research, outside of the course material, is defiantly good. That might include on line encyclopedias and other online sources. However, lazy research that copy-paste (or just change the order of the words in sentences) is refused in this exam. I want to read original answers and not repeated paragraphs copied from websites. Wikipedia is not academically trusted, so do not rely on information there without critical examination. Cite any sources you use clearly and reference quoted text clearly.
All my best,
1- The sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two within society; Explain what sociology’s task and its promise is. And explain how sociology deals with the ‘common sense’ and the ‘normal’ acts in society?
2- Many Americans believe that: the more the individual works the more success and money he gains. Why would Marx oppose this belief? How would he make his argument in critic for such a belief?
3- In his study of “Suicide” Durkheim investigates how, social facts – understood as ways of acting, thinking, and feeling – are external to individuals and have their own reality outside the lives and perceptions of individual people. Explain! And show in your answer how suicide is not only about depression.
4- According to Weber “‘Man is dominated by the making of money, by acquisition as the ultimate purpose of his life. Economic acquisition is no longer subordinated to man as the means for the satisfaction of his material needs’”. How, according to Weber, does a specific protestant set of ethics meet the needs and rationalities of the spirit of capitalism? And show how in Weber’s perspective the notion of ‘calling’ affect the development of the capitalist mode of production?
5- According to Althusser, what are the kinds of ideological state apparatuses in society? What differentiates them from one another? What is the most important ISA for Althusser, and why?
Thank you,
I attached the class notes below in case you need to understand.
