Suicidal Ideation Might Include Designing A Group

Designing a Group Experience Assignment

This week assignment involves a hypothetical group (Patients with substance abuse problems)

Section 2: Formulating Goals

Section 3: Weekly Sessions(12 session)

Section 4: Therapeutic Techniques to Achieve Goals

Section 2: Formulating Goals

construct a reasonable set of group goals that are appropriate to the clinical situation, achievable in the available time frame, and clarify for the participants how the procedure of the group will help them attain those goals.

Section 3: Weekly Sessions

This week you will develop an outline of weekly sessions for your group experience. The number of sessions and the topics and/or activities are based on your assessment of the setting, duration of the group, clinical facts, patient population, and group goals. For each week, provide a topic, activity, and objective. For example, a 6-week group therapy experience for adolescents with depression and suicidal ideation might include a weekly session devoted to exploring the impact of their death on family and friends (topic). The participants are asked to write their own eulogy and share with the group (activity). The objective is to explore personal meanings of life and death and the interconnectedness of significant relationships.

Section 4: Therapeutic Techniques to Achieve Goals

In this section, you will identify and discuss therapeutic techniques that will help you achieve the goals for the group and integrate therapeutic factors.

Select a minimum of two therapeutic factors that you believe will play the greatest role in the achievement of your group’s goals and provide a rationale for your choices.

Discuss specific techniques that can be used to facilitate the integration of the therapeutic factors and help ensure that the group’s goals are achieved (for an example of instilling hope into a suicide prevention group).
