When the writer views the history of the developments of medicine, she notices that throughout history, the developments of medicine have evolved. Past developments offer opportunities for medicine and the developments within this vast field to evolve and change along with time. Technology is and will forever continue to evolve and change, and along with that will come advancements in medicine and medical developments. History of and about past developments are relevant to the present and future, and no when thinking of such experiences, the writer feels that Maya Angelou explained it best with one of her quotes. Maya stated, “I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going”. Why, even today, some medial techniques are still utilized from ancient Egypt, such as simple suturing, immobilization of spinal injuries, and use of splints for fractures (Showalter, 2012). While today the writer identifies a variety of vaccinations, introduction, and availability to chemotherapy, x-ray, and the use of anesthesia as important developments in the history of medicine coming from the belief that healing was of supernatural powers. The writer must admit to her that the most important development is that of organ donation and organ transplantation.

Organ transplantation is the medical procedure where the desired or needed organ is removed from one individual body and placed in the body if the individual whose organ is either damaged and missing. The writer finds this development to be of most importance in that it serves purposes of providing treatment for end stages of organ failure and giving the recipient a second chance at life or even better quality of life. Speaking from a caregiver of an individual who is an organ transplant recipient, the writer attests to how important organ donation and transplantation is. The writer has come to learn that despite how valuable organ and tissue donation and transplantation is that there are more individuals needing organs and tissue than there are donations. Just think of if the developments in medicine remained the same from centuries ago. According to Showalter (2012) before the 19th century, medicine was believed to be that of mysticism and superstition, there was little to no knowledge of the natural disease process and relied heavily on shamans for healing power (p.28). If the developments of medicine had not continued to evolve and the same practices as those mentioned continued, the amounts of deaths would be unimaginable. The Bible speaks frequently and heavily of love and acts of charity, and organ donation slated as being an act of charity and a way of showing love to our fellow sisters and brothers for whom receive those organs that are donated. 1 John 4:11 states, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love and another” (Holy Bible ).

The history of medicine underwent significant development with the introduction and development of four new processes, anesthesia, training for nurses, pasteurization, and aseptic surgery. Dr. John C. Warren introduced an anesthetic drug to prevent patients from experiencing pain during surgery by inducing sleep. The techniques were demonstrated while performing surgery before a live audience. Florence Nightingale’s efforts to promote aseptic techniques for wounded soldiers lead to her founding the first school dedicated to training nurses on aseptic techniques and the importance of sanitary conditions in hospitals. However, I consider the works of Louis Pasteur as the most significant contribution to the history of medicine. “Pasteur developed a process known as pasteurization which slowed the growth of microbes in food.” Showalter, J. Stuart (2015) Pasteur addressed the cause and prevention of disease. He was able to prove that unseen micro-organisms were a source of infection. The discovery caused a paradigm shift towards sanitization, aseptic techniques, and preventive approach to medicine. I work in an aseptic pharmaceutical compounding facility. Maintaining an aseptic environment presents many challenges from personnel training to microbe detection in ISO designated areas. Joseph Lister furthered the work of Pasteur, and he developed what is known as aseptic surgery. The technique consisted of the sterilization of surgical instruments before use on patients. Scientific knowledge of invisible microbes provided the foundation for Lister’s success against human or instrument induced infections. The scientific evidence produced by Pasteur made a lasting impact on medicine. The evidence disproved the mythical causes of numerous diseases.

A hospital can resort to an emergency hearing to discuss important matters of child custody that might result in serious problems for the child. Such cases are held within the shortest time possible to identify the best outcomes that best suits the interests of the concerned child. Allen & Faris (2017), states that the issue that affects the child must be posing a safety risk to the child, and it should be able to be within the limits of the law. For instance, child abuse which puts the health and welfare of the child at risk. Child abuse by parents poses a risk to the child since they can sustain physical and mental injuries. When such a child is taken to the hospital, the hospital can decide to have an emergency hearing in order to protect the safety of the child.
Additionally, patients who are mentally conscious can sometimes cause unnecessary commotions in healthcare centers, and such commotions may result in damage to hospital property or damage to employees and other patients. When the healthcare center realizes that the patient did not have any mental problems, it can decide to have an emergency hearing. Sometimes healthcare centers may also restrict parents from seeing their parents at specific times. Being aware of hospital visitation hours, some parents may demand to see their patients at their own time, resulting in commotions between the parent and health officers on duty, and although this might seem a minor issue, it can lay grounds for an emergency hearing (Abuzeyad et.al. 2018)

Emergency hearing is done when there is a conflict between a patient family member in the hospital medical treatment. Often times medical hearings can’t involve three parties. The immediate family member such as the husband, extended family members and friends, and the overall medical team that is caring for a patient. As mentioned in the text for this course a husband was in conflict with the hospital in regards to a medical transfusion for his wife. These type of conflict can be due to religion or personal believes. It is not unusual for these type of conflicts to be due to negative feelings toward the patient. There are Several reasons that will lead to a emergency hearing. One of the most leading reasons is the DNR treatment. DNR is abbreviated for DO NOT RESUSCITATES. DNR Are usually completed in documentation. However, if it’s not documented a family may conflict on rather a DNR request is true. Another emergency hearing will be based on the competency of the patient. If a patient does not seem to respond in a competent manner treatment may need to be considered by a advocate rather than the request of a incompetent patient. Emergency medical hearings can be detrimental to a patient. To avoid the use of medical hearings is the documentation of one’s personal desires.
