You are expected to write an essay (not including the title page, charts, and references) on general issues around
restorative justice or on topics we cover in this course. The purpose here is for you to explore how and in what ways the restorative justice can or cannot be viewed as a fundamental applicable justice strategy.
Students can research ideas such as: in what cases is it relevant to encourage a meeting between the victim and the
offender? What types of victim and offender are more likely to benefit from a meeting? How and why should they be
involved? How can the individual characteristics of each case be taken into account? In what way and at what point in
time is the participation of victims desirable and appropriate at the various stages of the penal procedure?
In doing so, students should extend their critical analysis in a manner that is well-informed about the limitations of Restorative Justice in contrast to its benefits. Researching the principles that inform the traditional justice system and looking at the Restorative Justice philosophies, students are encouraged to either support Restorative Justice or stipulate if and when, its limitations are realized. If the latter is so, then an explanation of why it should live in the traditional criminal justice system should be explored generally.
