Region Play Around Online Assignment
migrants communities in the DMV area
For that project, you will need to find evidence of globalization in the built environment (by this term I mean buildings, statues, businesses, etc., but definitely not people).
In preparation for that assignment, I would like you to get familiar with the geography of the area – in particular, I want you to identify the areas across the region where immigrants are concentrated.
To start with, examine closely the map available at the file upload (if you download the map, you should be able to open it in any web browser).
This map is color coded to show the percentage of the total population that was born abroad in each census tract in our region — the darker the blue, the higher the concentration of foreign-born residents in the neighborhood.
As you pass your curser across space, you’ll see a number that tells you the percentage of foreign-born residents in that neighborhood. And if you click anywhere on the map, it will bring up more detailed information about the immigrant groups resident in that neighborhood.
If you click on the icon on the right-hand side of the map with 3 squares layered on top of each other, you can select other “layers” of the map that will show you the percentage of the population from particular immigrant groups (it contains the top ten immigrant groups in our region).
Play around with the map and its various layers in order to get a better sense of the distribution and concentration of immigrant groups in the area.
As you review the map, think about how you might use this information to identify places in the region where you could find photographic evidence of globalization.
Based on the information on the map, please answer the following questions:
- Where would be a good place in our area to go if you wanted to look for evidence of globalization linking our region to some place in Latin America? What evidence of globalization do you think you might find there? Be specific.
- Where would be a good place if you wanted to look for evidence of globalization linking our region to some place in Africa? What evidence do you think you might find? Be specific.
- How about if you wanted to look for evidence of globalization linking our region to some place in Asia? What evidence do you think you might find there? Again, be specific.
