Drawing upon relevant course readings, please respond to two of the following three questions. Please
prepare each of your responses as an essay (i.e. with an introduction, body, and conclusion). As you
discuss the readings in your response (and you are fully expected to do so), please cite your sources
using the Chicago Manual of Style. Your essays must be specific, well crafted, and utilize concrete
examples from the literature that demonstrate your understanding and analysis of the subject matter.
Note that while you are free to use the textbook Freedom on My Mind, your success on the final
exam will be heavily dependent on the degree to which you engage the other assigned readings.
The textbook is to give provide you with a narrative framework to support the concepts covered in
lecture.
Your responses must be typewritten in Times New Roman, 12-point font, and total 10 doublespaced pages with one-inch margins, and include page numbers.
1. Discuss major events, issues, ideas, and people prominent in American and African
American life during the Great Depression. In what ways did blacks respond politically,
socially, and culturally during this era? How did American political institutions engage with
blacks and black demands? How did these responses differ from those of previous eras?
2. There were several prominent organizations active during the African American Civil Rights
Movement. These include the National Urban League, the Congress on Racial Equality, the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Write an essay that discusses the
origins, contributions, and major personalities of each of these organizations. How did each
organization impact the African American struggle for freedom? How were they similar? In
what ways were they different?
3. Write an essay that discusses the narratives and contributions of the African American
women between the 1950s and the 1990s. What were some of the challenges that these
women faced and the intersection of race and gender? How did they respond to these? What
do we learn about African American political, intellectual, cultural, and social history by
studying the varied contributions of African American women?
