Problem Statement Paper

Minimum of  2 full pages, not including the APA title page or reference pages.

Each student will draft a clear statement of a social problem*** that clients at their placement experience.
****If you have no placement, please let me know.

Identify the agency/organization in which you have become aware of a  problem that impacts the clients/consumers/and/or community members.

Give the agency’s mission statement, which is often found on their webpage. Briefly describe services provided.

Does it appear the problem is a result of  a policy, a project, personnel  is it a practice problem, lack of resources
or are there other reasons for this problem continuing?

The problem definition needs to include a description of the following:

  1. Problem: a clear definition of the social problem on the macro-level**** (affects a large number of people), including the length of time of the social problem, has been evident and the cost of the problem to individuals experiencing the problem and those perpetuating/benefiting from the problem. (This will need to be very specific. For example, although poverty is a social problem, you can get more specific- low wages, high cost of living, limited affordable housing, etc.)  You must cite evidence-based data (minimum three sources).
  2. Population: an exploration of the population that is most affected by the social problem (including demographics).
This social problem may affect a diverse group of people but there is most likely a group that the problem disproportionately affects.  How many people are you speaking about? What are their characteristics? You must cite evidence-based data.
  3. Location: the locality or arena where the social problem is evident and where the change will take place (Although the social problem identified may be evident in multiple communities (i.e. police brutality, teenage pregnancy), you will need to explore a specific location to define the problem and subsequent interventions).
