Postmodern Approachi Also Need Discussion Post
Hi, I need help with discussion board-Initial Post-10 meaningful sentences-
Initial Post: Explain three (3) ways that the postmodern therapies differ from most of the
other therapeutic approaches you have studied thus far. Be sure to
connect your response to something you learned in Chapter 13 or from the
chapters covering the other therapy techniques you are using for your
comparison. To clearly illustrate that connection, your response must
contain the page number from the textbook in order to earn full credit.
Attached is chapter 13-Postmodern Approach
I also need reply (5 meaningful sentences) to the following post: This does not need to be connected to content in the textbook.
POST for reply:
Without digging into the chapter too deeply, three things that stand out as different about post modern therapies compared to more traditional therapies are:
1. They focus more on brief therapy. (Corey p. 373)
2. They aren’t concerned with the past or how the problems came to be. (Corey p. 371)
3. They don’t focus on a client’s “pathology”, but see them as healthy people that are capable of discovering their own solutions. I like the little adage that “the person isn’t the problem. The problem is the problem” that is associated with narrative therapy (Corey p.386).
Other differences include the therapist viewing the client as the expert on their own lives and the natural inclusion of multiculturalism and social justice, rather than “tacking it on” after the fact.
While I absolutely love the positive and optimistic focus of these therapies, I think there are times when it isn’t necessarily wise to discount the past. Certain “pathologies” in my opinion, stem from past traumas that need acknowledgment and healing in order for the client to fully move on. Otherwise, they run the risk of constantly reopening those “wounds” repeatedly. However, once the deeper issues have been dealt with, I can see the merits of shifting to one of the post-modern therapies.
