Part I: “Real World” Individual reflection on the semester

This will be a minimum 1,600 word personal essay about what you view as “real” regarding the

experiences of Asian Pacific Americans. This assignment is intended to offer you a reflection on

what we discussed and learned in this semester. This essay also offers to review the semester.

For this personal essay, review your class notes and include quotes from the readings, lectures,

and films that stood out to you the most. Consider our discussions on the intersections of race,

class, gender, and sexuality; identity; community issues; his/her/ourstories; and the struggles of

Asian Pacific Americans. From these materials, consider the following questions:

1) What was your “real world” prior to this class? What are the items, events, or concepts that

have made an impression on you? Has your “real world” changed after taking this class?

What is your biggest takeaway from this class?

2) Identify 3 things that you have learned this semester and describe why each one is

significant (and/or why it left an impression on you).

Canvas by Sunday, December 6, midnight.

Part II (Collective): “ They Can’t Burn Us All: Coming Together as Asian Pacific Americans

and Allies in the Time of COVID”

Throughout the semester we explored myriad of experiences and struggles faced by Asian Pacific

Americans on personal, local, and global levels. We will close the semester by addressing how

these struggles have been exacerbated by the current COVID-19 pandemic, by forming virtual

communes to discuss these issues and coming up with ways to address them.

This project is entitled, “They Can’t Burn Us All: Coming Together as Asian Pacific Americans and

Allies in the Time of COVID.” The title of this project is named after the movement created Asian

American rapper China Mac and actor Will Lex Ham to address anti-Asian attacks during COVID.

The goals for this project are:

1. To begin the discussion in our communes (an intentional community of people sharing

interests and resources) of what are the most pressing issues in Asian Pacific American

communities during this time of COVID.

2. To create a virtual creative space to not only discuss these issues, but offer creative ways to address them.
