Nursing Leader Interview Assignment

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student an opportunity to reflect on leadership thinking via the use of an interview with a Nursing Leader.  

Course Outcomes

This assignment provides documentation of the student’s ability to meet the following course outcomes: 

        The student will be able to analyze and apply the leadership and management role into the nursing profession 

        The student will be able to differentiate between the manager’s responsibility to advocate for patients, subordinates, their employer, the profession, and for self.

        The student will be able to relate management processes to management practice at the unit level.

 

Points

This assignment is worth a total of 25%.

Requirements

1.     The Nursing Leader Interview Assignment is worth 25% and will be graded on quality of self-assessment, use of citations, use of Standard English grammar, sentence structure, and overall organization based on the required components as summarized in the directions and grading criteria/rubric.

2.     Follow the directions and grading criteria closely. Any questions about your essay may be posted under the Q & A forum under the Discussions tab. 

3.     The length of the reflection is to be within four to five pages excluding title page and reference pages.  A minimum of three peer-reviewed citations are to be used throughout the assignment aside from your course textbook.

4.     APA format is required with both a title page and reference page. Use the required components of the review as Level 1 headers (upper and lower case, centered):

Preparing Your Nursing Leader Interview Assignment 

The BSN Essentials (AACN, 2008) outline a number of healthcare policy and advocacy competencies for the BSN-prepared nurse. Reflect on your virtual clinical learning experience, course readings, discussion threads, and applications you have completed across this course thus far and use it to write a reflective essay regarding the following questions and points:

 

Step 1:

 

1.     Conduct an interview of a highly respected community nursing leader from a variety of healthcare settings; hospital administration, long-term care facility administration, clinical nurse specialist, clinical educators, clinical supervisors/managers, nurse researchers, community health leaders, nurse educators, professors, nurse politicians/lobbyists.  The focus of the interview will be on topics such as leadership style and practices, communication technique, responsibilities, vision for nursing and problems that nursing in general faces over the next five to ten years.  The following questions should be part of the interview

a.     Please tell me about your role, education, and professional experience.

b.     How do you define leadership?

c.     How do you Model the Way?

d.     How has assertiveness and/or conflict resolution played a part in your practice?

e.     What is your personal communication style?

f.      How do you inspire a vision?

g.     How do you see yourself as a change agent in driving organizational outcomes?

h.     How do you challenge the process?

i.      How do you enable others to act?

j.      Please discuss prioritizing and delegation as it applies to nurse-client situations.

k.     Tell me about a nurse leader or manager who influenced you?  What were the qualities about this person that made him or her a great leader or manager?

l.      How do you inspire the heart of your staff?
