PART ONE: ANALYSIS ESSAY (100 points)
Texts to choose from:
-
-
- Petrarch’s sonnets: make it clear which sonnet(s) you are referring to; only select from poems assigned for our class
- Shakespeare’s sonnets: make it clear which sonnet(s) you are referring to; only select from poems assigned for our class
- Machiavelli’s The Prince
- Anne Bradstreet’s poetry “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and/or “Upon the Burning of Our House”
- John Milton’s sonnet “When I Consider How My Light Is Spent”
-
Select ONE author from the list above and then craft an essay about a text (i.e., one poem or one treatise) or multiple texts (i.e., an entire sonnet sequence) from the list above, and write an essay that examines the following:
Essay Topic:
Inspiration can be considered an important aspect of all of the above texts. Some authors are inspired by experience, some by events occurring around them, some by love, and some by God (just to name a few possible sources of inspiration). Explore the inspiration for the text and how it manifests in the text itself. Consider imagery, tone, symbolism—how the inspiration influences the theme of the text.
Also consider the audience. Was the text written with the intent of readership? How can you tell? Does the author address the audience? How does the author manipulate the audience? If the author did not intend for the text to be read, how can you tell and how does that influence your read of the text?
The essay should demonstrate your analytical abilities. Do not merely summarize the texts. You should draw an interpretive conclusion and support it through specific textual examples.
Develop your response in essay format including an introduction, multiple body paragraphs and conclusion. Write for an audience that is not a member of our class. Remember that titles of short works housed within a larger work get put in quotes and titles of longer works get put in italics.
The essay should contain a minimum of 3 quotes to support your assertions. Quotations should have parenthetical citations indicating author and page numbers if available. The essay should be a minimum of two pages and a maximum of four pages, but all central ideas should be fully developed and supported.
NOTE: You are free to make a Writing Center tutoring appointment for assistance with this essay. This is an optional choice. If you do make a tutoring appointment, be sure to provide the tutor with a copy of the assignment instructions.
PART TWO: Creative Text (100 points)
Texts to choose from:
-
-
- Petrarch’s sonnets: make it clear which sonnet(s) you are referring to; only select from poems assigned for our class
- Shakespeare’s sonnets: make it clear which sonnet(s) you are referring to; only select from poems assigned for our class
- Machiavelli’s The Prince
- Anne Bradstreet’s poetry “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and/or “Upon the Burning of Our House”
- John Milton’s sonnet “When I Consider How My Light Is Spent”
-
After spending the semester posting to the discussion forum and completing essays, this option will allow you to think about the works listed above in a medium other than academic writing. The objective of the Creative Text is to show a connection to, or a deeper understanding of, a text through a medium other than academic writing.
*Special Note: You ou are completing both Part One and Part Two of the Final Analysis, you must select a different author from the one selected for Part One.
Select from the list below:
- Write your own sonnet sequence. This should include four different poems. The sonnet submitted to the discussion post may be included as one of the four if you decide to keep the same subject. The sequence should show a progression of events and highlight different emotions. For example, meeting someone, having a relationship, breaking up, moving on. Use the sonnets of Petrarch and Shakespeare as a guide.
- Write your own treatise on how to be a good _____ (leader, president, parent, athlete, etc.– pick one or come up with your own choice) This should be at least two pages and no more than four pages. Be specific. Highlight examples from real life. Use Machiavelli’s The Prince as a guide.
- Write a longer poem (at least four stanzas) that explores a difficult time that you went through. Use Bradstreet’s poem “Verses Upon the Burning of Our House” as a guide. The poem should reflect on the experience and how you handled it. Use of imagery and other literary devices is expected.
- Imagine that Anne Bradstreet and John Milton are pen pals. What do they have in common that they might discuss with each other? Write two letters from each person.
