Interpret Recent Events Including That101 Univers

  1. Worth 1.5 points towards your Final grade: In a short paragraph of approximately 175-200 words, please answer ONE of the following prompts:1. Discuss what the significance of either the Eskimo folk tale OR the Science fiction story by Johnny Young in terms of the overall “social message” of the piece. Think about how these stories can be interpreted in light of the fact that this play is a response to the Vietnam War, and/or any other social issues that are relevant to the play. Please include a short quotation from the script in your answer, and unpack the quotation.2. This play was written in 1978 as a response to the malaise that was felt after the Vietnam War, when the soldiers returned after a military loss and many American casualties. The author, Lanford Wilson, said he wrote this play to inspire a bit of hope in a time when people felt at a loss for how to interpret recent events including the war, the Watergate scandal, and the various social movements that seemed stalled in the 1970s after the social movements related to Civil Rights that were seen in the 1960s. Which of the characters in the play, do you think, are intended to give the audience a sense of hope about the future? Use a short reference or quotation from the script in your explanation.3. Use a “Critical Lens” to explicate the play… to help with this, I have posted slides of some “Critical Lenses” in the Course Documents tab on blackboard. Here are a few of them that might be relevant: Formalist Critique, Materialist Critique, Deconstructionism, Psychoanalytic Critique, Feminist/Queer Critique, etc.
