Instructions for Research Project

For this course, you are required to write a research paper of 4-6 pages. You will choose a text out of ourreading assignments. Your paper should provide a well-focused interpretation of ONE important concept or theme in the text. It should have a clear, well-formulated and supported thesis. Make sure that your thesis argues a point and that you support that point throughout the paper.Avoid retelling and summarizing the text; assume that your audience has read the story.

Your essay MUST be in MLA format. For your assistance, this instruction sheet follows MLA style (e.g., 1-inch margins, no title page). You must use the font Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced, as I do here. The use of sources (including class notes and information from the Internet) for any information must be properly cited in the MLA style. This is true even if you do not use quotes. Papers without proper documentation of sources will not be accepted. The paper must be your own work. Plagiarism will be prosecuted as fully as allowed by FIT policy, including failure in the class.

You must use at least two outside sources for this paper – critical, theoretical, or historical that are NOT blogs or encyclopedias. These should be books, scholarly or periodical articles that discuss the main work you are studying (in other words, in addition to your primary text). The paper should be accompanied by an annotated bibliography, MLA style.

On November 23, you must submit the FINAL PAPER Proposal form, which you will find under Important Course Documents folder on Blackboard. If you attach an annotated bibliography to your proposal, you will receive five bonus points! The first draft of your paper is due on November 30th. The final draft of the paper is due on December10th.
