Writing Summary #1: Immigration and Urban America

The first writing summary (20 points) in History 17, from the module on Immigration and Urban America, will be due not later than Sunday, February 20 at 11:59 PM. Please be sure to observe the parameters of the assignment, especially the 2.5 page minimum of writing. Write in complete sentences (no numbers or bullet points), in which each sentence has a subject. Organize the summary thematically. Identify 4-5 themes or issues. Introduce each in a fresh paragraph of the topic sentence. Incorporate a variety of historically specific terms. These might include 6-7 such terms from the reading list provided. Directions: The terms below and on the subsequent lists will be used for each of two (2) course components. First, they will be used to compose multiple choice questions for quizzes and exams. Second, students will be expected/required to incorporate (a minimum of six) them into a 3 page summary for each topical module in the course. Be sure to observe the required 3.0 page minimum. Points will be deducted for failure to do so.

Prompt: Who were the immigrants arriving in the United States circa 1880-1920? What were the adjustments they faced as they sought to create new lives in the U.S.? Why did they migrate to larger urban areas? What benefits did they provide to American society, circa 1880-1920? Why did some persons and organizations view the new immigrants as a threat? What measures were proposed and taken to limit the entry of people from certain world regions?

Step 1: Identify specific conditions, problem and locations. The conditions and amenities of urban life circa 1880-1920. Organizations and legislation attempting to control and halt the presence of people coming from areas beyond Northern and Western Europe?

Step 2: Introduction and use of relevant historical evidence.

Step 3: In a concluding statement or paragraph provide some analysis of the larger meaning of this outcome.
