Nicely written post. I enjoyed reading it. Breaches in confidentiality is not a good experience and needs to be avoided. Confidential documents should be discarded by paper shredding, data encryption email should be used by both sender and recipient (Blightman et al., 2013). According to Blightman et al., (2013), photography and video taking of patients must be subject to strict control using hospital equipment.
In my early days of nursing, a lot of nurses were fired as a result of going into people’s chart they never took care of. One older nurse saw in her personal medical chart a list of health professionals that have taken care of her before and currently. She noticed a colleague’s name on that list in her chart. This nurse wondered when this colleague cared for her and how her name was listed as one of those who worked with her. This nurse was sure that the staff never took care of her and reported this incdient to HR. When HR started investigating the case, they found out that the same intruder (Nurse) had opened several staff medical records and read through them. Everyone was investigated and so many of them lost their jobs and they left the hospital sadly.
If the patient is cognitively sound and willingly expresses consents to disclosure, then the doctor or Nurse practioner is relieved from the duty of confidence.. THe NP in scenario 2 failed to get consent from the patient before using pictures of her wound for a presentation poster.
