Choose an agency that is new to you and NOT where you have worked, interned, volunteered or utilized as a member of the community.

Complete the following:

  1. A physical visit to a community resource. Pick a resource that you are interested in or will help you in the future as a social worker.
  • You are required to take public transportation to your chosen agency. This is an important and mandatory piece to this assignment. Please make all attempts to problem solve any issues with logistics and contact your instructor IMMEDIATELY if this is an issue.
    • Due to our country opening up slowly after COVID-19, there is an option students may choose if they have health concerns regarding taking public transportation. Student will choose one of the following to meet public transportation requirement:
      • Student will take public transportation to the chosen agency. Student will discuss their experience while taking public transportation, how the experience may impact a client and how it may make them feel and what challenges may be felt, or
      • student may choose to discuss how they would purchase the public transportation ticket, estimate the time and the cost of the public transportation, map out the route that they would take to get to the agency and discuss the difficulties the client may have in taking public transportation.
  • You will be interviewing a social worker at the agency you select. Make sure you make contact with the person you’d like to interview to establish and confirm a time to meet.
  • A three-page paper to include the following:
    • A description of why you chose that agency and the relevance for your clients.
    • A personal interview with a social worker at the community resource (be sure to include their name and title in your paper and include their business card in your assignment submission).
    • You will discuss with the interviewee what the agency does, what population they serve, their professional role within the agency, their professional experience, their funding source, how services are secured (is there a referral process, for example), and agency demographics.
    • Include specific details and your reaction to the agency visit
    • Your experience while taking public transportation; how the experience may impact a client and how it may make them feel; what challenges may the client feel or the student may choose to discuss how they would purchase the public transportation ticket, estimate the time and the cost of travel and then also map out the route that they would take to get to the agency and discuss the difficulties the client may have in taking public transportation.
    • Attach a copy of bus pass, transfer or a detailed description of the bus (this will be provided whether the student chooses to take public transportation or chooses to complete the alternate option), the number, license plate number and driver’s name and the business card of the social worker you interviewed
