Take a moment to refresh your understanding of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

  • Maslow’s pyramid consists of five needs. Which of those do you think it most important to the overall well-being of an individual? What is the difference between a need and a want? Please share an example. Finally, how would you explain self-actualization? Do you think every individual is able to reach self-actualization? Why or why not?

Although, Maslow’s pyramid hierarchy of needs consist of physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-realizations; their ranking or level of each importance is determined case by case. I have read about cultures who are not materialistic and do not care about self-realization. They are happy with their families and the simple things in life. However, I believe that the physiological need would be most important. Why, because we have been informed that we can survive on bread and water alone. “These needs are essential to human and animal survival. If unmet, they dominate motivation, regardless whether other, higher-order needs are also unmet” (Cloninger, 2013, pg. 287). Everything else is a bonus. We have been taught to believe what is taught to us and function with what is available at the time. All the other needs are developed according to new developments and the outcome is based on how everyone else respond to the activities that surround them.

The difference between a want and a need is the ability to obtain the want opposed to the need being mandatory in order to survive. An example would be, if you were stranded on an island and you needed water to stay alive from dehydration. You may want cold water, but you simply need water of any temperature to quench your thirst. Dirty water will save your life just the same.

Self-realization is a personal endeavor to reach the full potential of who you can become. I think reaching self-realization depends on the character, motivation, determination, and personality traits of each individual.

Hello Everyone,

In Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs there are 5 levels. The lowest level is the physiological need which is the basic needs such as food, water, sleep, and sex (Cloninger, N.D.). The second lowest level is safety needs which consist of safety (Cloninger, N.D.). The third level is belongingness and love needs which is a “person seeks love and friendship” (Cloninger, N.D., p. 287). The forth level is esteem needs which is self-esteem and the esteem of people other then themselves (Cloninger, N.D.). The highest level is self-actualization which is when a person reaches their full potential (Cloninger, N.D.). I believe self-actualization is the most important level for an individuals well-being because if a person is able to reach this level all the other levels have been meet in some way. I believe self-actualization is when a person is truly happy with themselves and their life because they have everything they need, but also are able to do what they want. Personally, I think everyone has the potential to achieve this level of self-actualization if they are able to fulfill the other needs and if they are able to see past themselves. Anyone is able to achieve anything if they are determined enough to do so and are able to get passed any issues that may come up.

A need is something a person needs to survive. An example of a need is milk for a new born baby or air to breath. A want is something a person desires, but does not need for survival. An example of a want is Starbucks coffee or candy from the store.
