Using Technology to Improve the Future
As addressed in the readings, technology has the potential to both solve global social problems and make them worse. For example, technological devices that can interact with the environment have the potential to reduce world hunger by helping to increase food production in developing countries. However, some technological advancements—such as weapons of war and automated assembly lines—can threaten life through armed conflict, and pollution of the environment can increase poverty by eliminating jobs.
Do advancements in technology pose any direct and/or indirect threats to the global environment? Choose one advancement and provide two examples of direct or indirect threats in your explanation.
2) PEER REVIEW #1 (ANIKA)
Hello Class and Professor,
I believe that advancements in technology have a direct threat to the global environment. One advancement that we are seeing around the world is the Automation tools the companies are using now. This is an issue for developed and developing countries, Automation has reduced the number of jobs around the world. One example is AT&T, they have developed an automation tool that will do devices testing, network design work and generate reports. A neighbor of mine is working on a project with AT&T they had a team of 30 engineers as of last year when the Automation came in to play the team got cut in half. They now have only 14 engineers working on the project. At&t put all of the devices in a lab and they can access them through the automation tool and test these devices from any state. Its a great tool but it had an impact on 15 families that are known of.
Now in developing countries this has a bigger impact because they already have a limited number of jobs and with the this advancements it will hit them harder. Countries in East Asian where most of the worlds manufacturings happens will now have Automated assembly line to produce more product faster. This will take away half of the jobs and it will a big impact on its economy. If people don’t have jobs how will they be able to buy products themselves? The link below shows that 1.8 billion people now need to find new jobs. Just in the US, we are seeing this happen in front of us. If we go to Walmart or any grocery store we are seeing more self check out lines open then a cashier counters open. Soon most of these store will be using fully Automated registers.
3) PEER REVIEW #2 (SHARON)
Hi Professor and Classmates,
I believe advancements in technology can pose direct and indirect threats to the global environment. The advancement that I chose is eco-friendly technology which can help preserve the environment through energy efficient and the reduction of harmful waste (1). Green technology is in its earliest stages but it has already been made in areas like renewable energy, water purfication, and waste management, and everyday consumer products such as electronics and vehicles (1). Some eco-friendly technology involves recycled, recyclable and/or biodegradable content, plant-based materials, renewable energy, and energy-efficient to name a few (1). It doesn’t emit anything into the air (2). It can slow the effects of global warming by reducing CO2 emissions (2). Renewable never runs out (2). The direct threats of eco-friendly technology high implementing costs and there are uncertainty about performance impacts (2).
