  1. In a 200-350 word post, respond to one of the following prompts:
    • Consider the opening lines from Washingtons Up from Slavery. What is the tone like here and throughout the rest of the text? For reference, Frederick Douglass goes into graphic detail in his Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in relating stories of terror and abuse that slaves endured. What are the worst things that Washington reports from his experience as a slave? How does the tone and content reveal or suit Washingtons purpose?
    • Describe Washingtons plan, as articulated in the Atlanta Exposition Address, for achieving black uplift in America. Do you agree or disagree with his methodology?
    • Do the criticisms W.E.B. DuBois levies against Washington in The Souls of Black Folk change your view of Washingtons platform? Why or why not?
      • Note:Write your response in paragraph form with a clear thesis and a clear organizational strategy (including topic sentences and transitions). Be sure to include textual examples/evidence to support your response, and document examples/evidence with MLA in-text citations.
