Assignment Overview

Your final assignment in this course will be a research paper expanding on one of the topics we will discuss this term. Papers should be a minimum of 1000 words, double-spaced, using 11pt font. You should use at least five sources and include a Works Cited page and in-text citations in proper MLA format. 

Your topic should be submitted as a roughly 200-word abstract (double spaced, with your topic as the header on the page) explaining what questions you intend to answer with your research and why you are interested in exploring this topic. 



Potential Topics

For this paper, you are encouraged to choose a topic that you find interesting. If you are unsure on where to start, consider these options:

  • The constitution Continuity and Change in the Governing of the United States
    • Describe the evolution of the bill of rights. How has its interpretation changed over time?
  • Equal Protection of the Law
    • Interpret the phrase All Men are Created Equal.
    • Explain how the definition of Equality has changed from the time of the Declaration of Independence through the civil rights era. 
    • Explore how the 14th amendment affected civil liberties in the aftermath of the Civil War. 
  • Political Parties
    • How have their positions on major issues changed over time?

Additional Instructions

Because this is an undergraduate-level research project, all papers must include the following:

  1. An introduction with a thesis statement. The thesis is the main question/argument that frames your paper.
  2. A body composed of supporting details backed by appropriate research. This paper should not just be your opinion on a given topic it is a requirement that your essay is grounded in scholarly research, with all sources cited in MLA format.
  3. A conclusion that summarizes the implications of your argument.
