Fa Afafine Gender And Sex

Fa Afafine Gender And Sex

Choice #1:

Select TWO academic articles/scholarly sources (ie. a journal article, article in an edited volume) that discuss one example of a third gender in a particular society (eg. hijra, Two spirit, fa’afafine – remember that transgender (in our society) is NOT the same as third gender, so do not use this as an example). Using these articles, relevant information about gender/third gender from your text, and other course material, outline how and why this particular example of a third gender challenges notions of gender binarisms/dualities (if they exist in this society) and/or mainstream ideas about gender in this society. What does the existence of recognized third genders in societiessuch as the one you explore say about the concept of gender and how we (as anthropologists/anthropology students) understand this concept? Your response should be in essay format, between 1400 and 1600 words. You do NOT need a title page. You also do not need to put your name on your paper as we will see your identity once you upload to Avenue. Please upload your response as a Word or PDF to the Avenue Drop Box by January 30 by 11 p.m. Once you upload, log out of Avenue and then log back in to make sure it attached properly. Submissions of incorrect files will not be graded. Your response will be filtered through turnitin.com once it is uploaded to Avenue.

Choice #2

Select three (and only three) online or print media articles (ie. by journalists, not scholarly articles). Examples may include magazine articles, newspaper articles, etc.) that deal with the MeToo movement. Using all relevant course material (ie. you must dig through the text and integrate it into your paper — careful here to ensure that you are using everything and anything relevant – this question is a bit harder than it looks!) discuss how this movement is related to each of the following: changing notions of gender equality, and shifting notions of hegemonic masculinity and femininity. Of course, this movement is about other things too! But you will only discuss these two issues in your paper. Your response should be in essay format, between 1400 and 1600 words. You do NOT need a title page. You also do not need to put your name on your paper as we will see your identity once you upload to Avenue.
