Explain Joseph Campbell Eng 124 Cc Reflection Of
Choose one of the assigned readings for class (Beowulf: The Graphic Novel, “Zlateh the Goat,” or “Scheherazade”), and write an academic essay in which you explain Joseph Campbell’s concept of the Hero’s Journey and provide at least three strong examples (including quoted evidence from the chosen text) about how that story reflects (or deviates from) established steps (not stages) of the Hero’s Journey. Aside from the story and sources about the Hero’s Journey provided in Canvas, students are not expected to do additional research for this assignment.
When considering the points to address in the body of the essay, focus on three to four specific steps–not the 3 general stages–of the Hero’s Journey.
Here is a list from the resource Hero’s Journey 101Preview the documentPreview the document:
The 12 steps of the hero’s journey are…
The Ordinary World
The Call of Adventure
Refusal of the Call
Meeting the Mentor
Crossing the First Threshold
Tests, Allies, Enemies
Approach to the Inmost Cave
The Ordeal
Reward (Seizing the Sword)
The Road Back
Resurrection
Return with the Elixir
Use ONLY sources made available for class–NO outside sources are allowed for this assignment. With that in mind, do NOT quote from the original Beowulf. Quote ONLY from Beowulf: The Graphic Novel.
Additional Notes:
Since Advanced Composition is a place to share your individual voice and unique thoughts, I expect you to write an essay of your own original thinking.
Include 2 to 3 quoted passages in each body paragraph–at least one from the story and at least one from the sources in the modules about the Hero’s Journey.
Write an essay that is 1,000 to 1,500 words.
Write about the individual Steps in the Hero’s Journey instead of the broader Stages.
Directions:
Write a 4- to 6-page academic essay in MLA format.
Begin with an introductory paragraph that hooks your reader’s attention, provides background information about the Hero’s Journey and your chosen story, and leads seamlessly into a clearly stated thesis.
Develop body paragraphs by beginning with clear topic sentences and incorporating quoted and detailed evidence from our course materials (use ONLY your chosen story and information provided in Unit 1 about the Hero’s Journey). Quoted evidence should be incorporated thoughtfully and thoroughly into the essay by doing the following:
establishing context,
introducing the quoted passages,
explaining how the passages support the main ideas of the body paragraphs and the essay as a whole, and
using proper MLA format to cite the texts.
Conclude your essay with a reflection of the story, the Hero’s Journey, and what we, your readers, can gain or learn from your analysis of the Hero’s Journey.
