Expanding Consciousness

Expanding consciousness within nursing fraternity alludes to awareness about human conditions. Therefore, irrespective of the situation confronting people, they are still part of the broadening knowledge about their healthcare (Savieto & Leão, 2016). The expansion of consciousness consistently supports connectedness and establishes a crucial and greater mean in life. Human connection is a central aspect in the quest to promote access to healthcare (Endo, 2017). If people understand and acknowledge what their health constitutes, they will be in a better position to make decisions that reflect this awareness.

The expansion of consciousness implies sensitivity about diseases and illnesses, particularly how they affect human life, which directly applies to the health care society today. According to Margaret Newman, advocating for good health is not restricted to the presence of a disease or an illness (Endo, 2017). Instead, health is the process of universal expansion of knowledge.

Jean Watson’s Theory

Authentic presence and intentionality are critical avenues of providing care by a nurse. Through presence, a nurse can optimize the ability of a patient to heal within. Jean Watson affirms that nursing has the potential to enhance and promote self-actualization (Savieto & Leão, 2016). Moreover, through caring, a nurse builds the nurse-client rapport, therefore improving communication between them and providing room for quality care delivery.

Jean Watson’s theory directly applies to any patient population. As a nurse, I will apply Watson’s concepts through the creation of a stable, trustworthy, and honest relationship with my clients. Secondly, I will also display unconditional acceptance and accommodation of a patient’s viewpoints about care (Smith & Parker, 2014). Furthermore, I will ensure that I do not interrupt my patients during our engagements. Patients should feel comfortable during the entire caring process.
