Historical Periods Group Assignment

The goal of this assignment is to familiarize you with the main historical periods associated with Western European art and culture. For this assignment, we will focus on just three of the eras:

Baroque (primarily the late Baroque and 18thcentury)

Classical/Age of Enlightenment

Romantic

Each group will present a roughly 10-12 minute presentation that provides and overview of the main features/trends of the era. These may include:

Cultural and Artistic features or developments

 Historical trends or events that defined or occurred during the time period

Technological or scientific developments, discoveries, or advancements

Government structures and/or important political leaders

Important figures (writers, poets, generals, scientists, etc.) how helped shape the time period

Other relevant information
While you are free to discuss musical characteristics briefly, groups are encouraged to focus on other areas, as we will discuss the music more fully in class.

Presentations should be made using PowerPoint or a similar format. Presentations should be a summary of the group’s findings on the topics above. They should also include several examples (not those cited by our text) of artwork (painting, sculpture, etc.), architecture, and writing (novel, poetry, treatise, etc.) that are characteristic of the period with explanations of how those works exemplify the ideals of the era.

Each group member should turn in their own 1-2 page written summary of your findings, focusing on the particular area that you researched and contributed the presentation. Turn in your papers via turn-it-in link.
