Provide instructions for a process that you regularly complete. This can be something related to a daily task, either at home or in a workplace. In your instructions, number each of the steps in the three stages.
Introduce the Instructions
1. State the operation to be explained.
2. If applicable, give the purpose and significance of the instructions and indicate who uses them, when, where, and why.
3. If applicable, relate the instructions to a larger whole.
4. Indicate any needed preparations, skills, equipment, and materials.
Develop the Body of the Instructions
1. Give a brief overview of the operation.
2. List each step one by one, and develop each step fully with sufficient detail about what to do and how to do it. Also, tell why a step is necessary, if applicable.
3. Include every step necessary to complete the operation.
4. If the operation is complex, subdivide each major step.
5. Emphasize particularly important points and caution the reader where mistakes are most likely to be made.
6. Plan the information using elements such as headings, graphics, space, and visual markers to identify sections and to enhance reading and understanding.
Close the Instructions
1. End the instructions with the explanation of the final step.
2. You may summarize the main steps.
3. Add a comment on the significance of the operation.
4. Mention other methods by which the operation is performed.
