Introduction

This paper is designed to discuss how over the past 8 weeks the author of this paper has learned so much and takes many of the areas within the class into the workplace. With each area that was covered in the class, there is a small part (and sometimes larger) that has been entwined into the position of Director, Enterprise Accounts.

Reflection

My position as Director of Enterprise puts me in the relationship building mode with Fortune 1000 accounts. This means that my main role is to sell print solutions which involves supply chain management on a regular basis because without the supply chain there would be no product for me to sell whether hardware of software. If the product, whether it be hardware or software or print solutions, can be described as the heart, the supply chain can be described as the blood, arteries and veins and one will not work without the other.

Our products are designed in Japan and many of the components are made in Japan, shipped to the US and assembled in California and New Jersey. My role is to build the relationship with large enterprise customers that buy or lease in heavy volume.

My job is the beginning of the transaction that will occur but throughout the process the problems have to be vetted and the solutions found. From this point the logistics part of the supply chain starts to kick in. This involves the Operations Department and packaging, labeling and transportation to the final destination(s).

Because my position is Enterprise, I am working mainly with the Procurement and IT Departments within the companies that I try to sell to. Although I try to have a “consultative” relationship, it is often difficult because most of the Large Enterprise customers have RFP’s for their purchasing decisions so in many cases I am working to be the best price, with the best service and provide the best quality but without having the ability to build a relationship as I would like. While working with the Procurement Department there are many certifications that must be met such as the ISO 9000. 9000—”Started in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization, a primary objective is to make sure that companies have standard processes in place that follow: “Document what you do and do what you document.” ISO 9000 involves a third-party registration program (not dissimilar to Underwriters Laboratories—a very well-known registrar) certifying that companies are following documented processes”(Coyle, Langley, Novak, & Gibson, p. 149).

I am confident that without a efficient supply chain management program in place we would not have the success a company, that we have. Kyocera is a $38 billion dollar company and one main that we have the success we have is that we realize the importance of this area of our business. “Given that something like 50% of businesses, regardless of their size, fail or close down within five years of launch, it can be deduced that poor supply chain performance commonly contributes to corporate or business failure” (Logistics Bureau, “Supply Chain and Success by the Numbers”).

I did not realize all the factors that come into play until taking this class. We always, as sales people want to say yes, but in reality it is apparent that without all the supply chain factions in place and properly and efficiently functioning there is no way that I or any company can be successful. I did not know all the pieces that formulate the logistics and operations department. This class has and will continue to make me a better sales person and employee.

Hi Jillian,

I really enjoyed reading your reflection this week and from what you wrote, really think you were able to take away a lot from the course. This is especially true because of your position as Director of Enterprise, that involves so many of the supply chain management concepts on a day-to-day basis without the supply chain there would be no product to sell. I liked your comparison of products and supply chain to the body and how the product cannot really function well without all the elements that work with it in harmony for a business to be able to run. The international elements of your products make supply-chain even more relevant as you are dealing with a variety of different logistics over multiple countries and long distances,

I also found that this class has helped to me to realize all the factors that come into play in, and how we need to consider the actual reality of how supply-chain systems work even when we want to say yes, since all the factions need to be in the right place and properly and efficiently functioning in order to be able for a business to be successful in the long-term. Great point and closing statement, it was great learning with you through this class! Good luck, in your future, equipped with the skills from this class that I am sure will make you a better salesperson!
