Write about a moment during your time in college when an important belief, spiritual understanding, or value that you held was challenged or “unsettled
Each reflection should be typewritten, double spaced, and may be 2-sided. Papers should
be approximately 2 – 4 pages, with 2 pages considered the minimum.
2. Your paper will have two parts, one which is a personal reflection (section 1 below) and
part two which examines our course readings in light of your own experiences (section 2
below)
Section 1- Faith/Spirituality Encounter Response:
Write about a moment during your time in college when an important belief, spiritual
understanding, or value that you held was challenged or “unsettled” by an encounter with a
different perspective. This could have happened in a class, a worship setting, informal
conversation, on campus, the broader community or cross cultural experience. Respond to
both of the following questions:
1. What did that moment teach you about yourself and how did that moment invite
you to grow?
2. How does this story fit into the bigger picture of your identity as you engage with
the diverse beliefs of community members and the Christian Anabaptist
perspectives taught at EMU?
Section 2- Examine Course Readings:
Explain the author’s ideas/quotes with page numbers; then give your analysis/perspective, for
both of the following questions:
1. Weaver notes a loss of trust in God, and questions where God is for her as she
grieves deeply. Her understanding of God’s “parental” role in her life is challenged.
In addition, she begins a process of spiritual seeking. Briefly describe several of the
ways Cindy wrestles with the place of God in her loss. Have you had a similar
experience where your understanding of God has been challenged? How has your
“spirituality” changed in recent years?
2. Weaver suffers from frequent moments of disorientation (deep sadness, anger,
numbness) as she grieves her daughter. Explain how she experiences these moments
and reflect on your own experiences of loss. Are your experiences of loss and
disorientation similar to what Weaver experienced? If not, how were they different?
