Development or characteristic of the Germanic kingdoms

Development or characteristic of the Germanic kingdoms

With the “fall” of Rome and the western half of the Empire, three different civilizations emerged in its wake to dominate its former territories in Europe, the Mediterranean coastal lands, and the Middle East: (1) the Germanic kingdoms and settlements of western Europe (producing the so-called “Dark Ages”), (2) the Byzantine Empire (the flourishing eastern remnant of the Roman Empire), and (3) the dramatically emergent and expanded religion and empire of Islam. All three would leave a significant imprint on Western civilization in the future.

Chapter 6 discusses developments and features of all three. For this week’s discussion post, select one development or characteristic that you find particularly significant or interesting within each of these three “civilizations.” Explain why you think those developments/characteristics are worthy of notice, and how they represented continuity or change with the imperial era that preceded it.

Note: In your discussion, be sure to show evidence of reading the textbook.
