Research a controversial problem that is local to you

You will research a controversial problem that is local to you. This controversy can revolve around proposals for a solution to a problem, or the effectiveness of a current policy. Based on your “scientific” observation of the evidence, you will assess the various arguments within this debate, choose a solution to support, and write an academic paper in which you argue for this solution. Your goal is to offer a fair, circumspect, and insightful analysis of the debate, and persuade readers that your proposed solution should be adopted. Assume that your readers know very little about your topic.

And remember, your research paper must always strive to contribute something new to the academic discussion and debate. It should not merely regurgitate well-known arguments.

Minimum: 1,500 words

Must include an original visualization (see rubric for guidelines)

Must utilize at least 8 sources

REQUIREMENTS

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to inform readers of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited, which usually relate to a particular research topic. Entries in an annotated bibliography are typically arranged in alphabetical order, they paraphrase or quote from their sources, and they employ the following structure:

Full length citation of source (written in consistent MLA or APA format)

Summary of source’s main argument (written as its own paragraph)

Evaluation of source’s quality and accuracy (written as its own paragraph)

Reflection on source’s relevancy to your research (written as its own paragraph)

You should complete at least 5 such entries for this assignment, and each should be at least 100 words in length.

Please write a reflection, in about 200-300 words, in which you respond to the following prompts.

1. Discuss what you’ve learned about your topic so far.

2. What controversy in the topic are you focusing on? Describe the nature of this debate.

3. Identify what else you need to learn about your topic to create a working thesis statement.

Those are “process work”. Below is apart of the essay itself.

For the Unit 5 Assignment, you must augment your textual argument with an original visualization of the data you collected. While you will obtain the required data from various sources, this visualization must be original and created by you for this assignment. In other words, you must accumulate and synthesize this data into something new, and something that is useful in terms of conveying your argument. You will create this visualization electronically, and it must be thoughtfully considered as well as neatly presented.

Below, you’ll find the specific criteria that I’ll use to evaluate your visualization.

Unit 5 Visual Supplement
  • Furthers the goals of the project (to persuade the audience to support the proposal)
  • Has a clear and very specific rhetorical purpose
  • The chosen type of visual is appropriate and strategic in the context of your purpose
  • Conveys the argument in a way that your textual essay could not by itself
  • Demonstrates thoughtfulness and creativity
  • Is clear and easy to comprehend
  • Compliments, and is integrated with, the discussion of the text
