Poetry is the synonym for the soul.
Poetry is the synonym for the soul. Poetry takes us to another world, one where we can find ourselves remembering and old love that we had thought forgotten but to me poetry is food to my soul, poetry brings tranquility to my mind and soul when the world around me is out of control. “The Peace of Wild Things” (p.717) by Wendell Berry. The poem is open ended and only 11 lines. The first part of the poem provides a look into the hopelessness and distress that society deals with daily. The author describes the stresses and the pressure of life that keeps us up at night in fear, “When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be”. The only way to find peace, security, and tranquility from the day-to-day anxiety and find that sense of freedom and tranquility the author describes a resolution to that overwhelming feeling and reminds us of the feeling of peace and freedom when he arrives by a stream of water and describes a place of spiritual renewal and healing. “I go and lie down where the wood drake. Rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.” The author describes coming to a place where he is calm and free of grief providing a time o careless and peace. “I come into the presence of still water. And I fell above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time, I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.” The author metaphorically describes coming into a space where he finds the peace his soul is in need of, although it is for just a short time, he can enjoy that freedom of no worries. The poem reminds us that we need to find the time to reassess our daily lives and digest the beauty and comfort that nature and poetry can provide us. A reminder to not worry about the future but to enjoy living in the present.
