2. How do artists use iconic symbols to convey images of power and/or status in their portraits? Which symbols are universal, and which are specific to a particular culture?
The use of iconic symbols are utilized to convey power and status through portraits. As seen in Napoleon’s portrait on the imperial throne, many symbols are seen from past historic ruler symbols from the classical times, and roman emperor times. The utilization of memorializing important rulers is seen universally in many cultures. The use of ̈larger than life size ̈ sculptures and having the rulers stand with one arm toward the viewer represents their authority and guidance they are willing to pass on to their subordinates.
