In answering this question, you must use at least eight primary sources and two secondary sources (which include the four books and my lectures) from the syllabus. Do not use any sources not on the syllabus.
.Formatting
I impose formatting requirements in order to avoid confusion. If I suspect that you have
violated these requirements (for instance, by manipulating the margins), I will request an
electronic copy of your paper and compare the two versions. You will lose points if you do not
obey the formatting requirements. They are as follows:
1) The paper must be in 12-pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins
on all sides.
2) The paper must include page numbers in the lower-right-hand corner of every page.
3) The paper must have a title (a real title, not “First Writing Assignment”). You may either
create a separate title page or place the title at the top of the first page.
Citations
I also impose citation requirements. If you do not know how to follow these guidelines
in your word processing program (Microsoft Word, Openoffice, etc.), then search for the answer
on the web, ask a friend, or ask me. Ignorance is not an excuse.
The requirements are as follows:
1) You must use footnotes, not endnotes or in-line citations. Your footnotes should use
Arabic numerals, not Roman numerals, letters, or symbols. PLEASE NOTE: footnotes
are NOT regular footers. Your word processing program will contain a special command
for inserting footnotes, usually to be found under the “Insert” or “References” menu.
2) The font of your footnotes should be 10-point Times New Roman, single-spaced. They
should not be indented. You may need to change the default settings in Microsoft Word. 1

3) You should NOT include a “Works Cited” or “Bibliography” page. Done properly, your
footnotes will include all the necessary publication information
4) Your footnotes must follow Chicago style. A guide to Chicago style is available on
Sakai.
Grading
In grading you, I will be looking for several things:
1) Quality of the argument and evidence used to support it. Do you make assertions without
backing them up? Do you dump information without explaining why it matters?
2) Quality of the writing style. Is your grammar sound? Are your paragraphs well-
structured, and does the paper have a clear organization?
3) Ability to follow directions. Have you formatted your paper properrswly and followed the
citation guidelines?
