Final reflection on the role of advanced practice nurses
Final reflection on the role of advanced practice nurses
You have written your perception of the APN role in the beginning of the semester. Upon completing the role class, any change of your perception about role of APN? Any suggestion or action that we can take to strengthen our role in health care? Please write a 1-2 page response and post it here. I have paste my perception as an ANP below.
A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced registered nurse who has many years of experiences and earned a master degree (aanp.org, 2020). The NP profession is growing each day in the United States. After completing the required coursework, NPs can sit for the board certification exam. Passing this exam means an NP can work in different kind of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, private practice, and primary care. The NP has more responsibility than a registered nurse. NPs can specialize in general family practice, women and children, pediatrics, cardiology, geriatrics, psychiatry, and anesthesiologist. NPs can diagnose, treat, plan, and manage patients. In some states, NPs can work independently or work under the supervision of a doctor who signs off orders. With advanced training, NPs can make a decent living and have a growing career.
Based on my encounter with NPs in an ambulatory care setting, NPs are in charge of the patients’ care and do the same things a doctor does for the patient. NPs are trained professionals, and provide competent care to the patient. I want to be a nurse practitioner to enhance my knowledge and to provide care to the patient at a different level of understanding. One day, I can have the opportunity to practice independently and start a private practice. I like the NP profession because I can diagnose, treat, plan, and manage patient care at a leadership level without someone telling me how to treat patients. What I dislike is that we don’t get paid enough; we are doing the same job as a doctor, but we get paid less. What should be improved about the NP profession? NPs should be able to practice to the full degree of their schooling, preparation, and experiences. Another improvement should be a change in payer policies, NP and physician collaboration to provide the best care, and continuity of care privileges in the hospital. The NP profession is evolving every day to provide the best care for the patient.
