Topic: “Guernica”, a mural by Pablo Picasso

Introduction

• In 1937 the German Luftwaffe bombed the defenseless town of Guernica in Northern Spain. Franco of Spain had made a bargain with Hitler.

• Picasso read the news report in Paris: his head was spinning, knees buckled with emotion, empathy, outrage, and anger. Through the next month, when the immense mural was ready to be moved for a showing in France; it was secretly transported to England, then the United States. In 1939 Picasso gave the Guernica painting to the Museum of Modern Art in New York until some future date when democratic liberties had been restored in Spain. Subsequently, the mural returned to Spain in 1981, displayed since then at the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid.

• Picasso was quoted as refusing to explain the many symbols and images in the Guernica mural as he felt they told the story eloquently. Do not presume Picasso though everything in the mural is open many interpretations: some of it is based on symbols representing aspects of the town of Guernica, truths, and some of it Picasso’s thoughts and emotions.
