Minority Experience Post (no power point required—but you may use one if you like!)
For this assignment, you will experience what it’s like to not be part of the majority. You should be mindful and aware of the experience. Observe what’s going on around you; be aware of the actions and perceptions of those around you.
Briefly:
Find an “experience” (see below).
Where was it? (where did you go; describe the environment/space, etc.)
When did it happen? (time, day, season)
Who was there? (large crowd; small group; individuals; group members, speakers/performers, etc.)
What happened ? (explain the process; ceremony; game; concert; etc.)
Why did it occur? (purpose; focus, etc.)
What was your experience/reaction? (How did people around you react? Did anybody say anything? Do anything? Did people make you feel welcome or unwelcome? Did you feel comfortable or uncomfortable? Would you do it again? What kind of insight did you gain about others?)
You should post your minority experience paper or PPT on the discussion board. You will be reassigned to different groups, and you should “talk” with your group members about your experiences. Did you share common experiences, etc?
Stuck for ideas? Here are some suggestions:
You do not need to travel across the world for this assignment. If you have never had authentic Indian food, find a restaurant and have a meal. If you’ve lived in Boston all your life and never been a tourist, to on a Duck Tour or wander around Fanueil Hall. If you’ve never been to a certain kind of sporting event—attend one. There are lots of sporting events that take place every weekend around the area—most of them don’t charge any admission.
You could ride the T a direction you’ve never been. Go to a beach you’ve never been to; sit in the part. Get Thursday’s Boston Globe and check out all the festivals and celebrations going on around the city—attend something! (or check on-line!) Check out a community theatre production or go to a choir festival. Attend a religious service. Shop in a store you’ve never been too!
Here are some things students in my Cape class did in May: Went to an organic farm and joined their co-op; went to church services; visited a nursing home; went for drinks at an exclusive/expensive lounge; went to an authentic, Japanese succhi restaurant
Please remember to be respectful of others—especially if you are a “visitor” in their space. Do a little research before you go so you have at least a vague idea of what to expect.
