UNIT 1 – DISCUSSION BOARD

Good Afternoon everyone,

Below is my post for the first part of this discussion board.

  1. Review the Terminal Course Objectives, accessed by clicking on the “Course Information” tab at the top of your screen, scrolling down to the “Course Objectives” and then selecting View class objectives. How will accomplishing these objectives support your success in management? What risks or challenges might a manager encounter if they have not mastered these objectives? Explain.

By reviewing the course objectives it will support the success in being able to have a specific timeline instead of an open timeline, meaning that items must be accomplished on a set date instead of an open ended date. Through this it will aid with accountability and ensure that items are accomplished. The risks that a manager might encounter if they haven’t mastered these is that they are ineffective in their daily duties as well as not being able to complete a needed task by the deadline.

  1. How are leadership and management similar? Different?

Leadership and management are similar that in both styles they are working with and for someone. The difference between these is that with leadership the individual is inspiring a person or group to want to do something because they believe in it as much as the leader does. Whereas with management individuals are not inspired nor do they necessarily want to do what is asked of them, they are simply doing it because it is their job.

  1. What are some examples of ethical challenges that leaders and managers face in today’s global business environment?

Ethical challenges that might exist for any manager is not understanding different cultures, backgrounds or the way others were raised. These can create ethical challenges in the sense that the manager may see things only from their perspective and that through this they find it difficult to work with their employees. What one manager might find to be the correct way of doing something another might not additionally depending on where the manager and the workforce are from the cultural differences could also add problems to the ethical challenges both might face.

  1. Are leaders born or made? Defend your position.

I believe that leaders are a combination of the two. No leader was only born and then from birth was able to be an effective and good leader. I think that leaders are also not only made, this would imply that we could teach anyone to be a leader whether this is a good or bad leader. Good or bad leaders are “made” through their life experiences but also by the values and ethics they are taught by their family. Additionally, I think that a person must have the right type of character in order for them to be a leader. By this I mean that they must be willing to step outside of what is considered normal and think outside of the box. More often than not a leader is someone who has combined their life experiences, the values and ethics they were raised with and their personal character strength to be a leader

  1. accomplishing these objectives it will help us in the future. Especially for those of us who are planning on being in the business feel in the future. Myself I plan on having my own business and knowing how to run it in Ways most people already don’t.
tThese things are being given to us so that we can be successful in the workplace or even in our own jobs that we own. It wouldn’t be something that you have to learn if it wasn’t necessary

If you have managers or leaders are in place that have not accomplish what we will throughout this course thing you may have issues like them not understand what it takes to be a leader of them not understanding what it takes to be a manager. They also may not know what there strengths and weaknesses they have that may be keeping them from doing their job properly.

How are leadership and management similar? Different?

Many people get confused between leadership and management. Management is usually filled with people who have the ability to get things done. They know the job and what the final goal is. They can and will delegate what needs to be done by the subordinates.

Leadership has followers. People choose to follow a leader for different reasons. This is a type of “give and take” relationship. ( ) An example would be a charismatic leader is someone who uses personality and values to reach others to get them to follow them.

Many people get confused between managers and leaders. Many leaders become managers. Not all managers are leaders. The two work well together in the most part. It depends on the type of managers and leaders you have will determine if it is a good fit for the individual employees.

Are leaders born or made? Defend your position.

I believe that to be a good and effective leader is one that is charismatic. This is one that is born with natural characteristics and has been taught how to use these traits wisely. There are many different styles of leadership. An Autocratic leader is one that is usually military focused. More like a dictatorship.

With this being said, I believe traits are within us when we are born. The things we learn as we grow mold us and teaches us on what kind of person or leader we will become. This makes it as though it is both, born and made. It just depends on how you handle what is given you in your life to be as strong a leader you will become.
