Analyze a primary research article of the same subject being selected for literature
The second part of the Literature Assignment#1 is to analyze a primary research article of the same subject being selected for literature assignment #1-part 1, and compare the validity and credibility of the articles between the lay-article and peer-reviewed article.
Upon successful completion of Literature Assignment#1 (part 1 and part 2), students will be able to:
- describe the objectives of a study, the experimental design, the key findings and limitations of a study.
- The differences between unreliable and reliable sources of information.
The instructions for Literature Assignment#1-part 2 are as follows:
1. Search one primary research article of the same subject being selected for literature assignment #1-part 1. The following databases are usually used for researching peer-reviewed articles related to food toxicology:

I will go over the search of peer-reviewed articles with you in class on 9/10/2020.
2. The primary research article should be published within 10 years (2011- 2020).
3. You will read, summarize and critically evaluate the primary research article. For more guidance, read the following link:

4. At the end of this assignment, include an overall summary putting the two sources of information (the lay article and the peer-reviewed research article) into context using your own words and thoughts (e.g., comment on the importance and validity of the article in your own words and thoughts. 5. The summary will be 2 pages long (around 400 words, type double-spaced) including
- the title, authors, when and where the article was published (just like your format for the first part of the assignment).
- the summary of the primary research article (~1.5 pages) : What is the purpose of the study? How did the authors test the hypothesis (briefly summarize the experiments)? What is/are the major finding(s) of the study Do you find any limitations of the study?
- the evaluation of the lay article for “part-1” and the primary research article for “part-2” : How reliable are the results/claims? (i.e., evaluate information quality, ~0.5 page)
