What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-1970s?
Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a contributory cause of
the Boston busing crisis.
African American's believed that the reason education in Boston was not satisfying their
needs was due to the segregation of the school system. African American parents filed a
suit against the education system for being segregated. They won and Boston schools had to
desegregate.
The busing plan started with 11th graders. This was to provoke violence. This resulted in a
riot at South Boston High School.
Media focused on racial violence. The death of Martin Luther King, Jr. created more anger
and violence.
These all indirectly contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-1970's.

In 1955, an African American female in Alabama, who we all know as the famous Rosa
Parks, refused to give her seat up on a bus to a Caucasian male. There is a picture of her
arrest that is evidence of that event. This event brought about the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
This boycott lasted for almost a year and the goal was to desegregate the buses in the city.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation was not right and agreed to desegregate the
buses. Everyone praised Rosa Parks as well as Martin Luther King, Jr.
