Documentation: APA (cover sheet, in-text citations, References)

Title: Give the essay an interesting title that indicates your attitude towards the topic

Purpose: This essay asks you to define what happiness is and to argue for the elements that you believe are essential to it. The essay requires you to synthesize your sources—that is, to use multiple sources in your paragraphs and to compare and contrast them.

Sources: Use at least eight sources: four sources must be essays from our textbook Writing and Reading across the Curriculum (Chapter 14) and four sources must be essays from Academic Search Complete database (found through Eli Oboler Library). Do not use dictionaries, encyclopedias, online searches, or books. Every source must be both paraphrased and quoted. Make sure that you use a lead-in phrase with every quotation and keep the quotations short. Each source must be used at least once.

Content & Organization: In the introduction, provide definitions/explanations of happiness as a general term and/or exclude things that you believe do not add to happiness. Organize the body paragraphs according to your selected sources of happiness—from the most important element of happiness to the least important (or vice versa). Think about such topics as money, family, education, religion, geography (national origin), attitude, experience, and genetics, etc. Choose four different topics and explore them in depth, using at least two sources per paragraph. In the conclusion, sum up of your definition of happiness. You might include an example and/or a quotation that fits your discussion.

Begin each paragraph with a clear topic sentence. Do not start a paragraph with a quotation or a paraphrase. Use your sources only as support. End each paragraph with your own example or analysis. Do not end a paragraph with a quotation or a paraphrase

You may rely on personal experiences and observations, but limit these and be sure to tie them into the essays that you are using.

APA References Page: You will have eight sources listed. Be sure to use hanging indentation and put the entries into alphabetical order. Refer to previous assignments, sample essay, and APA handout for help.
