Our assignment for today includes chapters 11-12 of The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as the film version of the novel. This will be a two part post (as far as content): Please respond to the following two questions. Be sure in your responses there are at least three direct quotations from the book altogether (not three per question). Please write at least 400 words in total. If you use any sources other than your own personal reading of the book or personal viewing of the film to answer these questions, be sure to identify them–doing otherwise would constitute plagiarism.

Chapters 11 and 12 are two of the darkest and most suspenseful chapters in The Fellowship of the Ring. What are the main techniques Tolkien uses to portray the threat of evil in these two chapters? Do not summarize the chapters, but instead discuss specific literary strategies such as setting, diction, characterization, and/or plot devices (maybe even the songs!).
Based upon your watching of the entire film, how would you describe the artistic philosophy and vision of Peter Jackson, the director of the film? Is his philosophy and vision similar to or different from Tolkien’s? Give specific examples from the book and the film in your response.
