Why is it important to study the processing of female offenders at each stage of the criminal justice system
Chapter 9 covered “Processing and Sentencing of Female Offenders” to describe the path of female offenders from arrest, bail or release, role of counsel, plea or trial, and through to disposition of the criminal case. Coverage included issues of race, ethnicity, gender, factors considered (whether legitimate or not is another issue), and the effect of sentencing guidelines – all compared to how things are done in other countries in consideration of similar issues. The effects of systemic gender bias don’t always favor female defendants.
