I read an article about how natural selection

The first one:

1. I read an article about how natural selection, one of the primary drivers of evolution, is still occurring in humans. People with longer lifespans had a lower prevalence of genetic variations linked with Alzheimer’s disease and heavy smoking. Researchers studied the genomes of 210,000 people around the US and the UK. The belief that humans do not evolve is a prevalent misunderstanding among non-scientists. Many believed natural selection was no longer in effect in humans. This research, however, indicates that this is not the case and that natural selection continues to influence how our species evolves.

2. Natural selection is working to transform the population by making it bigger. A study finds a decrease in the frequency of a gene linked to Alzheimer’s in women over 70. A similar drop in a mutation in the gene-related to heavy smoking-was seen in men at middle age.

3. What’s promoting natural selection is the drop of the gene linked to Alzheimer’s and heavy smoking.

The second, for another student:

The article that I read was by Emily Chung and reported on recent evidence that natural selection is still playing a part in evolution today. The effect of this are measurable. A couple of examples that were cited as being influenced by natural selection are the age at which people start having children and the body mass index of these children (Chung, 2019). These relationships were studied from DNA and medical data housed in the U.K. Biobank (Chung, 2019).

The researchers concluded that there were 13 traits in women and 10 traits in men that were genetic and linked to having more children; some of these traits were linked to one another, but because they were genetic they were able to be selected for with natural selection (Chung, 2019). Extreme traits such as being extremely tall were found to reduce reproductive success (Chung, 2019). These findings show that humans are still evolving even today.

The cause behind some of these evolutionary changes is implied to be education levels. Women who have fewer years of education and first child at a younger age were fond to have more children (Chung, 2019). With women having more opportunities to achieve higher levels of education, they are putting off having children until later in life, and thus having less children than their less educated counterparts.
